Why do pay dates sometimes ignore an observed holiday?
Direct deposits settle through the Federal Reserve, which stays open on the Friday before a Saturday holiday. Agencies differ: in 2027, DFAS pays military retirees on Friday, Dec 31 (an observed holiday), while SSA pays SSI the day before. Each of our pages follows the agency’s own published dates.
Are these state holidays too?
No. These are the holidays in federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103) for federal employees. States, banks and private employers set their own lists.
